Sports and Leisure Facilities
Visitors
to Llandrindod Wells are spoilt for choice if looking for sports
and leisure facilities, and the following are included to wet
the appetite. If you cannot find anything to suit your choice,
a visit to the Tourist Office in the
Memorial Gardens may be of benefit.
Football
Club
Llandrindod
Wells AFC was founded in 1883, and plays its games at the Broadway
ground on the Thomas Lant Field now flood lit. In 1994 it was
promoted to the Cymru Alliance league, having played for many
years in the Central Wales and Mid Wales leagues. The league is
rated as division 2 of Wales under the pyramid system, and there
are ambitious plans to extend the clubs facilities. As well as
the first team there are reserves and youth teams, plus under
15, under 14 and under 11teams.
Cricket Club
Llandrindod
Wells Cricket Club was formed in 1964, and originally named the
Nomads as all games were played away. During their first season
the club was granted the facilities of the High School cricket
ground, which they have used ever since. Until 1981 all games
were friendlies, when they were admitted to the Hereford & District
league. In 1988 a 2nd team was formed and joined the same league.
The club also runs under 15 and under 13 teams in the local Brecon
CCC junior leagues. In 1995 both the senior eleven's were admitted
to the Marches league.
Rugby
Llandrindod Wells
Rugby Club runs two senior teams in the Mid Wales League, as well
as youth and junior teams. The ground is floodlit and situated
on the Thomas Lant playing fields, and a clubhouse with full facilities
was designed and built by Rugby Club members.
Golf
This
18 hole golf course, set 1,000 ft. above sea level, overlooks
the town of Llandrindod Wells, and offers outstanding views over
the surrounding area. The course was designed by Harry Vardon
and opened in 1905. It is 5,759 yards long, and the pars are 69
for men and 72 for women. The clubhouse has been recently rebuilt
and has its own golf shop. The club extends a warm welcome to
visiting golfers.
Bowls
There
are indoor and outdoor facilities to cater for all visitors of
every standard. The three outdoor flat greens are situated in
the Rock Park, and there are three thriving leagues which make
full use of the facilities most evenings of the week during the
season, which runs from Mid-April until September. However the
greens are open to the public every day during this period, subject
to weather conditions, and overshoes and bowls are available for
use by the casual visitor. The greens are of the highest quality,
and as well as the Open Tournament, which is held in August each
year, the club has hosted the Welsh Bowling Association's Men's
National Championship for the past few years, the Ladies' Home
Internationals in 1994, and was the venue for the Atlantic Rim
Tournament in 1997, which will attract ladies from all over the
world. The Indoor Bowling Centre, situated next to the Pavilion
Conference Centre, Just off Spa Road, is open throughout the year
for visitors, and advanced booking is not essential, as six rinks
are normally available. It is open all day during the Winter (October
to April), but there are limited hours in the Summer months. Refreshments
are normally available. Please check at the information Centre
for details. Several indoor leagues use these excellent facilities
throughout the winter months and beginners and experienced bowlers
are made welcome.
